In fall 2008, when InnovationSpace students Gabe Holland, Christie Chiapetta, Josh Tong and Henry Braun formed Team Nexus, little did they know that they would be creating a partnership that would persist long after graduation.
Their project in the InnovationSpace class focused on the problem of sudden cardiac arrest. The acute condition has become a major public health concern. Sudden cardiac arrest claims the lives of nearly 325,000 people in the U.S. each year. For the majority of those stricken, help arrives too late. At a ceremony on April 16 members of the InnovationSpace program received the President’s Award for Innovation from ASU President Michael Crow. The award recognizes ASU employees or teams for innovations that improve educational, administrative or other organizational processes through creative approaches. “The work of InnovationSpace is immeasurably strengthened by ASU’s commitment to fostering creativity in transdisciplinary collaboration and social responsibility,” says project leader Prasad Boradkar. “We’re delighted to receive this award on behalf of our efforts to further these goals.”
The citation included the following members of the InnovationSpace team: Kate Benjamin, founding coordinator (2004-2005); Prasad Boradkar, project leader and associate professor of industrial design; Emily Callaghan, teaching assistant (2006-2008); Tamara Christensen, teaching assistant (2005-2006); Thomas Duening, codirector and director of the Entrepreneurial Programs Office; Adelheid Fischer, program manager; Mark Henderson, founding codirector and professor of engineering (2004-2007); James Hershauer, founding codirector and professor of management; Mookesh Patel, founding codirector and associate professor of visual communication design; the late Paul Rothstein, program founder and associate professor of industrial design (2004-2005); and Philip White, codirector and assistant professor of industrial design.
